High Speed Fault Current Limiting Protectors

The Challenge

In response to increasing energy demands, our mining customer planned to add 40MVA of additional power capacity to their operations, necessitating the construction of a new 11kV substation.

During the planning phase, it was identified that in certain operational scenarios, the fault level could surpass the rating of the switchgear in the new substation. This posed a significant risk of thermal and mechanical damage to the equipment.

The customer needed a reliable solution to effectively limit fault currents, ensuring the protection of their equipment while maintaining continuous, safe operations.

The Solution

CSE Uniserve, in collaboration with our technology partner G&W, presented the Current Limiting Protector (CLiP) as the ideal solution to address the customer’s challenge. The CLiP is a cost-effective, high continuous current, medium to high voltage current limiter. Its unique attributes, including the ability to commutate and electronically sense and trigger fault currents, make it an exceptional choice for overcurrent protection.

The unique ability to provide high continuous current ratings with current limitation and ultra-high speed operation in one package makes the CLiP an economical and efficient solution. Once implemented, the mining customer could effectively limit fault currents, ensuring that the switchgear’s fault ratings were not exceeded; protecting the equipment from damage.

CSE Uniserve’s sales team actively engaged with the customer throughout the process, undertaking multiple site visits and meeting with key stakeholders to understand their specific needs, ensuring the optimal deployment of the solution.

The dynamic collaboration between our team and the customer ensured that the solution met all requirements and provided robust protection for the mine site’s electrical infrastructure.

This case demonstrates CSE Uniserve’s commitment to delivering high-quality, advanced technology solutions to the mining industry, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted supplier to global mining giants.
