The paper was developed through a collaboration between Leonardo Torelli, Senior Technology Manager, and Jarvis Thornley, Application Engineer, from CSE Uniserve, together with Satendra Bhola (TasNetworks) and Matthew Weeding (Hydro Tasmania).
The award recognises the collective efforts of the authors and the contribution their work has made to the protection engineering community.
The recognition highlights the value of practical engineering knowledge, technical collaboration and the contribution of industry professionals working together to address complex power system challenges.
Tony Smoljko, General Manager at CSE Uniserve, said he was proud to see the efforts of the team recognised by their peers.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see Leonardo and Jarvis recognised for the work they’ve contributed alongside their industry colleagues. Awards like this reflect the many hours of collaboration, technical discussion and problem-solving that happen behind the scenes, and we’re very proud of everyone involved.”
Presented at APS 2026, the paper examined a real-world incident involving the inadvertent energisation of a large generator during preparation for synchronisation with Tasmania’s 220 kV power system.
Drawing on operational experience, the authors explored the sequence of events that followed, including circuit breaker pole conduction, protection system response and the operation of busbar protection schemes.
By analysing the behaviour of protection relays during an actual operating event, the paper provided practical insights for protection engineers and power system professionals and contributed to ongoing industry discussions around system reliability and protection scheme performance.
Technical papers such as this play an important role in advancing industry knowledge by bringing together expertise from utilities, asset owners and engineering organisations. Through collaboration and the sharing of practical experience, they support the continued development of safe, reliable and effective power systems.
CSE Uniserve congratulates all authors on this well-deserved achievement and acknowledges the contribution of each organisation involved in the development of the paper.
